Awards:
To add to the fantastic achievements (Trophy for Best Cabernet Sauvignon at the International Wine Challenge and Concours Mondial Gold Medal) the Guardian Peak Lapa Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 was awarded the Best International Red wine of 2009 at the International Wine Challenge Awards in London on Wednesday night. This accolade further confirms what weve always known about the wine and a big congratulations must be extended to winemaker Louis Strydom.

Proprietor Jean Engelbrecht was on hand to receive the trophy in London and also received the Planet Earth Award which is to honour the best Sustainable Producer.

Climate :
Mediterranean with the rainfall +- 650mm per annum, the EE vineyards are located high up on the northern slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. This contribution imparts warmer fruit flavours to the wine. In summer, the vineyards close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean result in cool sea breezes that keeps temperatures lower, extending the ripening period..

Soil :
A diverse composition of soil and topography add complexity and an array of different characteristics to the wine.

Vinification / Maturation :
Fermentation took place in open top fermentors and was followed by a maceration period of 14 days after primary fermentation. The wine was matured in first fill French oak for 18 months.

Appearance : Opaque

Aroma : The characteristic white oak spice, associated with new French oak, is infused with toasted pine nuts.

Palate : The Lapa Cabernet Sauvignon shows great integration between the oak and fruit, with great structure and length. The toasted aromas filter onto the palate with hints of lead pencil.
